SMS help to quit smoking - scientists

Jul 26, 2011

British scientists have found that the likelihood of quitting smoking is twice as high in those people who get the motivational text messages to mobile phones

They conducted a study entitled «txt2stop», which were first used biometric testing, reports Reuters.

The study involved about 5,800 Britons who want to quit smoking. Some of them received a motivational SMS. Text messages are supported in their effort to this and advised how to maintain weight after smoking cessation.

As a result, the number of ex-smokers was two times higher in the group receiving SMS.

In order to check whether some of the participants quit the study, researchers analyzed saliva.

"The program can be launched at the international level, from a technical standpoint - it's just," - said Caroline Frey of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who led the study.

To implement this technology needs testing and translation into other languages, as well as a preliminary assessment at the local level. Scholars have noted that the technology is easy to use.
